Question about Ianto
Hi everyone!

I'm writing a Jack/Ianto fic and I'd need an information. Counting till the end of season 2, for how many years has Ianto worked for Torchwood 3? Sorry if the question is complicated XD

Also I don't know if I'm allowed to post this here, but I didn't know where to find answers otherwise, anyways if I'm not allowed please mods feel free to delete this.

Thank you in advance :)

I don't know exact dates but I usually work on the basis that he was there for about 6 months before Gwen started working there.
I base this on the fact that he has had time to get Lisa into the Hub and arrange for Doctor Tanizaki to visit; both these things would take quite a bit of time. Then there are 3 months between series 1 and 2. I think of each series as taking place over a 12 month period so I think it's probably fair to say that he has probably worked there about 3 years up to the end of series 2.
Others may disagree but I don't think an official timeline actually exists anywhere so you are pretty much free to decide for yourself.

At the beginning of the Ianto flashback in "Fragments" in says "X Months Earlier." I want to say that X is 21, but I'm not 100% sure.

22 months at Torchwood THREE that is - we have no canon proof as to how long he worked for Torchwood London, but Jack (in Fragments again) implies that Ianto DIDN'T go to university and had spent three years "drifting". As you can choose when you want that "drifting" to start, you could make an argument for Ianto having started with One as early as 18 years old or as old as perhaps just a few months before we see him start playing Jack. As his personnel file included the information that he and Lisa were together, that would imply he;'d been at London for a littl while at least. We also don't know how long is between the Battle of Canary Wharf and Ianto returning to Wales.

In short - you could say as little as 23-24 months, if he had met Lisa straight away and then Canary Wharf happened immediately. Or you could say he'd been at London for as long or longer than he was at Three. Entirely your say!

In Fragments, which takes place at the end of series 2, there is a flashback to 21 months before when Ianto gets the job with Torchwood 3. In the flashback, Jack has a short monologue summarizing Ianto's history and states that Ianto is, "mainly a drifter until two years ago you joined the Torchwood institute in London." According to this, Ianto has worked for Torchwood 3 for 21 months at the end of series 2, but his total time with Torchwood at that point is approximately 4 years, assuming 1-3 months in between Canary Wharf and him getting hired at Torchwood 3. One of the previous commenters correctly references that episode to say that Ianto spent three years "drifting" but then says there is no proof as to how long he worked for Torchwood London, even though that information is given in the same clip.
