Part seven

Tosh went back to Torchwood but Ianto went with the police to give a statement and to sit with a forensic artist that made a drawing from his description of what John Hart looked like. It took the better part of the day. When it was done he asked to get a copy.

Late in the afternoon when he finally joined the team he felt completely drained. They had a short briefing. Tosh offered to take the night watch and let the rest home. Before heading out Ianto sent a message to Gabe telling him to meet him at his place. Not until he was behind the wheel of his car did he react to the fact that he hadn’t returned his message. He usually responded within a minute. Ianto sent another one saying he was in no mood for games and demanded an immediate response. He started the car and headed home and when he got there he still hadn’t heard a word. Stepping through the door he called him but got no answer. He left a message.

“Gabe. Where are you? When you hear this you have to call me immediately.”

He went about making dinner and eating. He tried to relax in the sofa in front of the TV. There was a film but he couldn’t concentrate on the plot. He thought about calling again but he really didn’t have to. He knew something was wrong but had no clue of what else to do but wait. So he did. Finally he drifted off to sleep.

At 3:30 his phone rang.

“Gabe?” he answered anxiously.

“Guess again!” said a cheerful voice at the other end. Ianto´s brain wasn’t functioning as quickly as he wished it would, but then again he had just been woken up in the middle of the night.

“C’mon now! Wakey wakey!”  the voice said.

“John Hart?”

“Disco!” the man at the other end laughed. “I’m glad I got hold of you, we have a little something to discuss you and me.”

“Oh yeah? What would that be?” asked Ianto and felt a knot rapidly growing in his stomach.

“Well since you so rudely interrupted me this morning and robbed me of my goodie bag I’ve decided to rob you of yours. That’s only fair don’t you think?”

“What have you done?” Ianto got up on his feet.

“Well now…let’s see…it would honestly be easier to answer what haven’t I done!” he laughed again.

“Is he dead?”

“Not yet.”

“Where are you? What can I do to stop you?”

“Oh you are no fun at all. So businesslike and boring. Well I guess it comes with the suit doesn’t it?”

“Why are you calling me?”

“Alright! Tell you what. There actually is a trade to be made here. See I really, really liked the little cookie I had this morning and I absolutely detest leaving things undone. So if you can get him back to me…you will get your precious boy toy back.”

“When and where?” Ianto asked. John gave the address of an abandoned warehouse and told him the offer would expire at 8 a.m.

“How do I know you have him?” he asked but John had already hung up. Half a minute later a picture was delivered to his phone. It was of Gabe and he was hanging on a wall chained by his wrists, not reaching the floor with his feet. He was wearing nothing but his collar. The position and his long dark hair made Ianto think of a crucifix. His face and torso was badly bruised. Ianto got tears in his eyes when he saw it. He quickly got into a pair of jeans and a sweater, grabbed an extra pair for Gabe and headed out the door.

He ran several red lights on his way to the Hub but there wasn’t any traffic to speak of so he didn’t care. He woke up Tosh who was sleeping on the sofa and explained the situation to her. He filled her in on everything, well apart from the explicit nature of the relationship he had with Gabe, he just told her they’d been dating for a few weeks. He showed her the picture he’d received on his phone and together they came up with a plan and a strategy. They decided it wasn’t necessary to bring Owen and Gwen in and then they armed themselves and stacked up on a large quantity of retcon in pill-, syringe- and spray form. Finally they headed to the hospital.

Pulling the wool over the night nurse’s eyes was no problem at all and once they had been subdued by an alien spray that would keep them paralysed for half an hour they could easily go and fetch the young man named James. Giving him a dose of the same spray and then putting him in a wheelchair took less than two minutes and then they were out of there.

The warehouse looked dark when they approached but when they got inside they could see a couple of candles stuck in wine bottles illuminating a corner of the big room. They went separate ways.

“Hart!” Ianto yelled out. “Are you there?”

“Over here!” He stepped out from behind a piece of equipment. He had a gun in one hand and a leash in the other. He pulled it and Gabe was presented as well. His neck was bowed and he was facing the floor, his hands were cuffed.

“Well well well! You certainly have come through for me haven’t you, Jones? And you brought me my cookie!” said Hart when he saw the wheelchair. James was starting to wake up from his paralysis. Ianto had been foreseeing enough to belt him so he wouldn’t be hurt by any instinct to run. He held his hand on his shoulder, leaned down and whispered in his ear.

“I’m sorry for putting you through this but just trust me. I won’t let that man hurt you again. This is just a set up to catch him. You are perfectly safe. Nod if you understand me. We need to save the other man too, you see him don’t you?” James nodded carefully.

“Good!” Ianto stood up again, glancing over at Tosh who was hiding in the shadows with her gun ready.

“You know, now that I have you here, I think I’m having a bit of a rethink” he paused and sighed “I know! I’m hopeless like that. Always changing my mind and making new plans.” He smirked.

“What do you want Hart?”

“Well, I have become a bit attached to this one” he nodded in Gabe´s direction “Man, can he take a beating! And now that you have been kind enough to bring back my cookie I’m thinking I could have my cake and eat it too!” he laughed at what he thought was a very witty pun. “Of course I would have to dispose of you first of all.” he said and pointed his gun at Ianto who quickly drew his own piece and squatted down on the floor behind a pillar. Hart took a quick sidestep and got behind Gabe putting his arm over his throat and collarbone.

“Don’t do this Hart!” Ianto knew he had to come a lot closer for his plan to work. “How about this? You let both of them go and take me instead. You said it yourself. I’m not a natural Dom. I will allow you to turn me into the best sub you ever had.” Hart didn’t respond right away. Ianto took that as a good sign. “Plus I have a feeling you wouldn’t mind having something that Jack Harkness likes to think of as his own, am I right?”

“Baby! You just said the magic word! Now we are talking!” He pushed Gabe in front of him a few steps. “Leave the wheelchair. Put the gun down and walk slowly over here. Hands in the air.” Ianto thought about it for a second and decided to take the risk and did as he was told. As soon as he took his first steps Hart actually let go of Gabe´s leach and pushed him away from him. Ianto wanted to look into Gabe´s eyes as they passed each other but the young man kept looking at the floor. Once Ianto had reached Hart he was quickly pistol-whipped across the face followed by a hard blow to the shoulder that brought him to his knees. Out of the corner of his eyes he could see Gabe grabbing the wheelchair, turning it around and pushing it outside. The pain was excruciating but Ianto managed to take a breath of relief at the sight.

“Hands on your head and face me!” Hart ordered and Ianto obeyed. He kept his head down and eyes on the floor, legs slightly apart in a classic submissive stance.

“Well would you look at that!” Hart said with surprising warmth in his voice “You really do know this game don’t you? This is much more your thing isn’t it?”

“Yes Sir.” Ianto forced himself to reply. Hart bent down and grabbed his chin, lifting it gently.

“Look at me.” When Ianto looked up he quickly scanned the room and could conclude that the others had gone. Even Tosh. He looked into Hart’s eyes.

“There is still fire in those eyes but I will take that away from you in time. For now we need to get going before those other boys get the cops here.”

That’s when it happens. Hart turns around and grabs his jacket. He puts the gun down in order to put it on. It’s the moment Ianto has been waiting for. He throws himself over Hart like a wild animal, punching him wherever he can. Hart is taken off guard and pushed to the ground but it only takes him a second to start fighting back. The two men fight ferociously, rolling around on the floor, knocking each other hard. Noses, lips, eyebrows starts to bleed, ribs are cracking. They are equally strong and the fight takes a long while before Ianto finally manage to knock Hart senseless by a rock hard fist against the temple.

Ianto was breathing heavy, sweating and bleeding but he managed to stand up. He pulled up the retcon from his pocket and administered a syringe containing a dose large enough to make Hart forget everything since before he ever met Gabe and Ianto. Then he walked out. Captain John Hart is an alien. Ianto couldn’t very well turn him over to the police. There would be too many questions and the people of Cardiff are not ready to accept such a thing. On the other hand he could have imprisoned him in the cell next to the weevils in the Hub cellar. He knows he probably should but he really doesn’t want to ever see this man again. That is why he let him lie there and walked away. It’s the only option left. The fact that he is an extremely twisted killer is a sickening feeling but it is out of Ianto´s hands. He recalls a chat he once had with Jack about making really hard decisions. He now knew what that feels like. Before he left he placed the police drawing of Hart’s face on his chest. When he wakes up he will know he’s a wanted man. Ianto hoped this will make him leave Cardiff for good.

When he reached the car Tosh was sitting behind the wheel and both the young men were in the backseat. Gabe was released of both cuffs and collar and wearing the clothes Ianto had brought.

“You guys need to go to the hospital and be checked out.” Tosh was explaining “James, you are already admitted; Ianto will just return you to the ward you came from. Gabe you might have internal bleeding or other wounds. You need to have a doctor take a look at those. I will follow you into the emergency ward.” When they reached the hospital they were just about to go their separate ways into different entrances when Ianto turned to Gabe.

“Come see me when they let you out will you?” Gabe didn’t answer right away and he didn’t meet Ianto´s eyes. “Gabe. We need to talk. Will you come to me?” Ianto repeated and put a touch of his dominance into his voice. Gabe looked up. Their eyes meet.

“I will come. I will take my bicycle.” He put emphasis on the last word. They both knew the significance of the word bicycle and Ianto nodded.

Owen fixed Ianto up back at the Hub and Gwen was furious about having been kept out of the loop. Ianto felt too tired to argue with her and finally she just gave up, finding it ridiculous to go on ranting at a person who wouldn’t defend himself. He told the others he would take a day off and there were no objections. But before he left he went and retrieved the dog collar from the backseat of the SUV. Then he got into his own car and drove over to that abandoned warehouse and sat there. It took several hours until Hart finally came out, but when he did he just ran off like a cockroach into the darkness. Ianto was clinging to a hope that it would be the last time he’d ever set foot in Cardiff. But knowing he was an old friend of Jack’s, he wasn’t at all convinced that he wouldn’t.

To be continued.
