Gadgets and obsessions?
I while ago e were talking about our rather obsessive Torchwood . . . well Jack and Ianto obsessiveness and recently I got a Kindle for my b'day and being the obsessive person I am promptly put a heap of fan fics on it...format problems and all...but I found a chappie on ebay who will make custom skins for the Kindle and I'm sure you can guess what's under the cut.

edit: I asked the chappie what size the picture has to be for him to make a skin and he replied that it needs to be at least wallpaper size which he said was 1024px, whatever the hell that means

The front doesn't work quite as well and I'm thinking of getting the Matrix Code Rain for it instead

Oh my god that's fucking awesome! You've made my night! :D

I think I need a Kindle now...
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 05:13 am (UTC)
*hugs* You're welcome.

I love it and I can take a bazillion fan fics everywhere with me without having to cart around half of Brazil's rainforests.

Now if I could just figure out ho to convert pdf to azw and not loose the format I'd be a happy, happy Vegemite. It does accept pdf format but the text is so small I need a bloody microscope to read anything
rift_bound on February 23rd, 2011 05:24 am (UTC)
What a gorgeous skin... I need one for my Kindle too. Who made yours?

Also, try downloading Calibre (http://calibre-ebook.com/ -- It is an e-book manager and you can set it up to convert PDF's to MOBI format which reads really well on my Kindle without all the probs that PDFs have. The formatting is okay as long as the PDF was formatted well to begin with. I've converted a bunch of fanfics to carry around with me too. Calibre is free too which makes it even better. When setting up to convert, select MOBI as the output format, then go to page setup and select "Kindle" or "Kindle DX" depending on which you have. I love it.
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 05:46 am (UTC)
It was made by this person for me and cost USD$20.

I've got that program :) It seems to be a problem with the Kindle 3 and the pdf format conversion.
usakiwigirl: Neon Get Someusakiwigirl on February 23rd, 2011 05:22 am (UTC)
Oh. Em. Fucking. Gee. I wants one. So bloody bad, I can't see straight. I can take a Kindle with me anywhere and then all my books and my favourite fics and, and, and...

I love the skin. I could have one made up of anything? Do you just email a pic and he makes it up? Did it cost an arm and a leg or just your thumb. I don't mind missing a thumb, I never use the left one when typing anyway! It's just superfluous to writing. And reading. I'd learn to hold it like a monkey. Or with my toes.

*is rambling* *IZ JEALOUZ*
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 05:49 am (UTC)
I know. I was shaking when it turned up.

Yup he seems to be able to do anything. I'd ask if the picture has to be hi-res or not. Actually I might email him and ask that anyway :)

It cost a whopping USD$20 so it would depend on your country and currency conversion rates.

usakiwigirlusakiwigirl on February 23rd, 2011 05:58 am (UTC)
Having seen the prices of skins from Gizmobies (I have one for an older Nano) US$20 is actually pretty reasonable and with your dollar being worth as much as it is... sounds like a good deal! I'd be paying for it with US$ no matter where I lived, so that's all cool.

But it's soooo pretty *makes grabby hands*. I didn't get a Kindle for my birthday and everybody in my family knows I want one. But - in fairness - we weren't anywhere I could get one so, maybe later. Mother's Day sounds good, right? It's our 20th anniv at the same time, so damn it, he owes me. I'd buy him something big (but not a $3000 guitar - get real - or a bloody small plane - I laugh). Yes, I shall leave big hints all over this tiny apartment. Even a blind married man should be able to figure it out!
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 12:05 pm (UTC)
Yeah I thought $20 was a pretty good price too.

If your family is anything like mine nothing short of belting them over the head with a Kindle will get the message through. I could paste a wall with pictures of them and they'd still miss the hint so I by-pass the whole hinting thing and buy it myself.

Hi, I got a Kindle for Christmas and have been experimenting a bit, if you make a larger font on your PDFs the letters get bigger on the Kindle as well, I use 20 for the fic and 24 for the title, if you do a copy/paste with open office it's real fast work too
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 11:59 am (UTC)
Oh cool thankyou :) I'm as new to working with pdf formats as I am the Kindle so it's been a rather frustrating learning curve so far.

Stupid question but how do you save pdf's at the bigger font? Every time I try it just opens up the same as it was before :(

idamusidamus on February 23rd, 2011 12:26 pm (UTC)
Open the PDF you want to change and open office, once you've made the copy/paste mark the text in open office, choose the fontsize, unmark the text (just click somewhere that's not a button), then you click on the PDF button up in the left corner, name the file and find where you want to save it, then you save, plug in the Kindle and transfer your fic, I hope this helps
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 01:11 pm (UTC)
Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou *lots of hugs*

I've tried ignoring the format issues but it's driving me mad.
idamusidamus on February 23rd, 2011 06:20 pm (UTC)
You got it working? :)
Trishspartan_117 on February 23rd, 2011 09:13 pm (UTC)
No not yet. I'm planning on having a go at it today :)
idamusidamus on February 24th, 2011 09:04 am (UTC)
Cool
By the way if you buy books from other sellers than Amazon choose the .MOBI or .PRC formats, they're Kindle friendly
Trishspartan_117 on February 26th, 2011 10:15 am (UTC)
The fan fics I have are now on Captain Jack (my Kindle) I discovered Open Office has plug-ins (d'oh!) and once I save a fan fic in one of the larger fonts I can export it as a pdf file straight to my Kindle and actually read it. WOOT!

Now I'm going to try and change the font size of an already converted pdf. Do you know if this will work in Open Office instead of Office?
idamusidamus on February 26th, 2011 11:10 am (UTC)
Most PDFs can be copied/pasted and made into a new PDF, it depends on whether or not it's protected and I have no idea how that happens, some of the PDFs I've made myself has one and some don't and I make them all the same way, if it doesn't work you'll have to find the original fics and copy/paste those.

Or you can try an online converter, but so far I've not been able to find one that keeps the fic name on the Kindle (or how to rename a fic once it's on the Kindle) :/, here's a link to the last I tried http://ebook.online-convert.com/convert-to-mobi, I do this with short series and just name the collection so I know what's in there

*hugs* How can anyone resist those two?

An FYI, if you want - AO3 has the ability to download any story on its site to MOBI format for the Kindle (also other formats), and having recently gotten a Kindle myself. At the top of every story (above the story information such as rating and pairing, etc), is a list of choices. At the far right is a tab for Downloads. Just click on that to get to the different formats. As long as Kindle is open as an App on your computer, then it will download in seconds.

Also, for stories not on AO3, this site: http://ebook.online-convert.com/convert-to-mobi converts a variety of formats to MOBI for free. Including .doc, .docx, .pdf, and .LIT (which were the books I bought for my Microsoft Reader years ago, but can't read on the Apple products I have now - although, the converter will only do the unencrypted books). It probably handles other formats as well, but I just don't have anything else to test. Oh, they don't convert Pages documents yet.

Also, Amazon has an email address on your Kindle page. You can attach and send them books in various formats, and they'll convert them for free. I've only used them for .pdf's so far, and I don't remember the others.

I hope this information helps you some.

Btw, I love your new skin. That is amazing.

Whoa!!! thankyou :) *looks really impressed* It takes me ages to work out things like that. Like my iPod. Took me forever to work out how to do things on it *heads desk* I'm not the sharpest tool in the shed when it comes to new programs and tech. I'd kill to be Tosh sometimes

All the time I spent trying to find a solution on Google and I should have just asked here.

*hugs*

I got a Kindle for myself and immediately loaded it with my favorites. I had to convert some of them to PDF myself, but they were definitely worth the time and trouble.

I solved the problem of the tiny type on PDFs by simply turning my Kindle on its side and reading them that way. It expands the text to fit the wider screen and that's much easier on the eyes. I just have to turn the pages more often.

But now that I know about the other options, you can be sure I'll be trying some of them out.

Love your skin! I'll be getting mine soon!

Trishspartan_117 on February 26th, 2011 10:20 am (UTC)
Yeah it is worth it. I use Open Office which is free form of Micro$oft Office and through much alcohol and experimentation I discovered that Open Office has plug-ins and export a previous saved document as a pdf. *heads desk*

Anywho this translates to me having fan fics I can now read. *grins madly*

Cool. :)

:) I spend as much time staring at the back of the Kindle as I do reading the fics
